It's hard to believe Leandra Medine was once "just" a fashion blogger who launched Man Repeller in 2012. Four-plus years later, she's a designer thanks to her new MR by Man Repeller footwear line that just launched with Net-a-Porter this week. The ten-piece line is all Medine—eclectic but chic, fun but wearable. Her fans have been waiting a long time for it. And it's not at all a disappointment.
Before Medine, who is also a published author, launched her website-turned-brand, I didn't have a name for the way I dressed. I knew it wasn't typical of the average woman my age, with mixed prints, bold silhouettes, and funky shoes. My friends (and mother) told me I'd never attract a guy that way, but I didn't care. I dressed for myself—no one else. And I did attract guys, specifically the kinds of guys who appreciated my love of fashion and my passion for writing about it. Then in 2012, the Man Repeller blog launched and it was like Medine had written something just for me. It put a name to the way I felt: like a man repeller. I understood that Medine wasn't trying to be literal with her website name. It's not at all about hating men or wanting to actually repel them, but about dressing for yourself, for your friends, and having fun with fashion.
4 Denim Trends That Take Jeans Beyond Basic Blue:
With the MR by Man Repeller collection, Medine is continuing to have fun with her style. She never takes fashion too seriously, as evident by the quirky style names of each shoe. The I’m Here to Party Boot is exactly the kind of gold shoe you want to wear to a bash, and the LOL If You Think I’m Walking Sandal is just that—a platform sandal that begs to be worn in the back of an Uber and not on the bumpy sidewalk. I'm dreaming about wearing the Morning After Flat (below), a velvet ballet slipper that's both comfortable and chic, but not at all basic.
Another one of my favorites is the Alternative to Bare Feet loafer. It's the pink shoe I've been looking for, that will let me run to the subway and to after-work drinks with ease.
MR Man Repeller retails for $250-$630, and is exclusive to net-a-porter.com. I highly doubt any of the shoes will repel men, but if they do, tell them Boy, bye.
