When you are a beauty editor, it comes to reason you are swimming in beauty products. And with that many highlighters, blushes, mascaras (you get the point) at our fingertips, it makes sense that beauty editors are probably also privy to some pretty cool unexpected product uses. Sometimes in testing out products, we don't even realize we discovered the next best hack. I asked my fellow Allure editors about their favorite off-label ways are to use the products they love. The answers I got were even new to me, so I couldn't keep them to myself. (That would just be rude.) Here are the best unexpected uses for regular old beauty products straight from our beauty editors themselves:
"I use bronzer in my eyelid crease instead of eye shadow. It’s a quick way to create depth and the illusion of a stronger brow bone on days when I wear less makeup. Bonus: I don’t need to carry an additional eyeshadow pot or palette in my makeup bag." —Gerilyn Manago, senior social media editor
"This is totally unconventional, but the only thing I use as zit cream is Vicks Vapor Rub. I put it on at night and, literally, by the morning, my pimples are gone. Vicks is also pretty much a holy grail product in the Latinx community. We use it for everything—at least in my family." —Chantel Morel, assistant digital editor
"Putting on clay face masks can be a messy endeavor, so I like to use a foundation brush for mess-free application. It makes me feel like I'm at a spa, even though it's just me in my bedroom." —Devon Abelman, associate digital editor
"I use any inexpensive, disposable nail file to clean up smudges when I paint my nails. I’ve found that its straight, thin edge is more effective at getting rid of smudges than a cotton swab soaked in nail polish remover. Plus, you don't risk the fibers of the cotton swab getting stuck in wet nail polish. —Hannah Choi, associate photo editor
Learn some other unexpected product uses:
"Face wash doubles as body wash. I use it this way because it’s easier to find a face wash full of high quality skin-smoothing acids, protecting antioxidants, and softening oils. My favorite: Eminence Organics Citrus Exfoliating Wash." —Jessica Chia, senior beauty editor
"To prime lashes before mascara, separate lashes after mascara or to set my eyebrows, I use clear mascara, like Maybelline New York Great Lash Clear Mascara. It’s a great dupe for some of the pricier brow-setting gels." —Gerilyn Manago
"Matte liquid lipstick can also be used as eye shadow. Before blending it in on my lids with my finger, I always check if the formula is safe for eyes. The lipstick stays forever, but be sure to move quickly when applying. It dries quickly." —Elizabeth Denton, digital editor
