Have you ever watched something and been like, "Holy shit, this is all too real"? That's what happened to me Saturday night—there I was, on the couch with my husband (we're wild, I know), and about halfway through Saturday Night Live, a pre-recorded sketch featuring the women of SNL aired. The CHONK skit from SNL, as I'll now forever affectionately refer to it, was just that—something I've seen before. But it being a new episode and all, I realized that was impossible.
Because of course I hadn't seen the CHONK skit from SNL before—it literally went live Saturday night. But what rung true was the satirical tone of the sketch (featuring several of the women of the show including Leslie Jones, Aidy Bryant (pictured), Vanessa Bayer, Sasheer Zamata, and Melissa Villasenor) and what it's like to be a woman who shops in 2016. CHONK is a "store" that sells sizes 2 to 28. They celebrate gorgeous, individual women. Sounds democratic, right?
As it turns out, not so much. The women call BS on some of the body-empowerment messages that have been pervasive in advertising of recent, or at least made me LOL about it.
The men, though? Forget CHONK. (Note: CHONK is purposefully in all caps.) Instead, they shop at a store called "Normal Clothes" where they sell a shit ton of flannel shirts.
While I do believe in the power (and importance) of body positivity, I couldn't help but laugh along at the good-natured poking fun Bryant, Jones and company do—and totally empathize. Watch below and you'll see exactly what I mean.
