If you haven't heard the devastating news, I regret to inform you that there's an avocado shortage. (That's why your avocado toast was so pricey last weekend.) Luckily, Laqa & Co. Avo Lip Butter allows you still have the good kind of fat in your life but in a zero-calorie form. Although it's a lip butter by name, it's actually a creamy lipstick packed with12 percent avocado oil. Smeared on your lips, it feels like your favorite hydrating balm, but it looks exactly like a lipstick with kickass color payoff and a satin finish.
Now that I'm starting to break out my jackets, that high dose of avocado oil is pretty much the perfect cure for the chapped lips I inevitably get anytime the temperature drops below 65 degrees. Usually, I have to step away from my beloved bold lipsticks because my lips are flakey, and the formulas settle in the craggy lines in an unfortunate way. But the Laqa & Co. Avo Lip Butter manages to fight away dryness while still delivering a really impressive blast of pigment. According to dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, that's all thanks to the healing powers of avocado oil, which is rich with vitamin E and fatty acids. "This potent antioxidant calms inflamed skin, while fats in the oil soothe and hydrate," he says.
The 12 percent avocado oil content seemed like a lot to me, so I dug a little deeper. Lots of lipsticks, like Urban Decay Vice Lipstick, are made with avocado oil. That's not anything totally groundbreaking. I asked cosmetic chemist Ni'Kita Wilson if 12 percent was really remarkable, and although she thought it wasn't "unusually high level," it's worth pointing out the oil's position on the ingredient list. (Like on food labels, ingredients on beauty product labels are listed in descending order of predominance by weight, i.e. most to least.) In Vice Lipstick, avocado oil is listed 29th. In the Laqa & Co. Avo Lip Butter, it's the fifth ingredient. That's significant.

The Laqa & Co. Avo Lip Butter comes in eight fun shades of reds, pinks, and nudes, ranging from Nova (a peachy nude) to Ninza (a deep berry). My favorite is the sole purple of the collection, Water Bear. It's a gorgeous violet that even my friends who are say they can't pull off bold lipstick can rock. The avocado lipsticks are available now for $25 on laqaandco.com.
