If you've ever wondered how your beauty regime compares to that of the average woman – or just how much of an impact selfies have on our cosmetics bags – ponder no longer. Yahoo News reported that a new study conducted in the U.K. found the average beauty routine among females is exactly 27 steps long, a number which has more than doubled in the past decade. The average beauty routine duration is now about 40 minutes, whereas in 2006, it was only 17.
Though they did not report exactly what those steps are, it requires no stretch of the imagination to figure it out. Over the past few years, multi-layered makeup applied with razor-sharp precision has been trending. Think of everything that's been popular in just the past two years alone, from contouring, highlighting, strobing, brow-grooming to lip ombrés and false lashes. The list goes on. So, when you consider this in combination with the social-media-fueled, growing pressure to be ever selfie-ready (the two are definitely related to one another) it makes sense that we'd be clocking in much more time in front of the mirror.

The Daily Mail also pointed out that we're likely being influenced by a combination of Kardashian kulture – that is to say, certain celebrities are normalizing a heavily made-up look, where as a decade or so ago, women like Sienna Miller were popularizing minimal looks. “It’s vital for today’s young beauty lover that they are selfie ready at any time of the day or night. They are taking professional makeup artist routines and recreating them for their daily lives," a spokesperson for Superdrug, the company that conducted the study, told them.
Though it would seem that the pattern indicates our beauty routines will only get longer and more complicated with time, it's also possible that the opposite could happen. There are already multiple celebrities advocating for the #NoMakeup Movement, and a filter-free social media presence is beginning to have a bit of an authentic appeal. As we know, most trends are cyclical, meaning whether you're a huge makeup junkie or prefer your five step routine, your look will have its moment, and you'll be able to rock it in the meantime, whether you spend 40 minutes in front of the mirror, or just a few.
