The iPhone isn’t even 10 years old yet (crazy considering we can’t remember how we ever got along without it), but since its inception back in 2007, it has totally reinvented the world of cellular communications. Duh. It’s also undergone a bit of a style evolution; there’s a reason we all wait with baited breath to see the seductive new design tweaks with each new version—the iPhone is about as chic and sleek as ultra functional tech gets.
Its style evolution reads something like this: iPhone versions one through three were all pretty similar (remember those rounded corners?), then came the first big design update with iPhone 4’s sleeker, flatter model. iPhone 5 got another makeover, getting a little taller and thinner before Jony Ives and team brought back a vintage twist with the bigger, rounder iPhone 6. And of course there was the highly hyped iPhone 7 drop with its new sleek jet-black styling. But these have all been pretty subtle tweaks—the iPhone has yet to get a truly major makeover.

That might be changing big time with the release of iPhone 8—Apple’s 10-year anniversary edition of its product. We’ve got one word for you: Foldable. According to a report from Newsweek, the tech giant has been exploring the idea of a foldable iPhone since 2013—and it's just officially been awarded a U.S. Patent for a design that describes a phone that can fold completely in half. The concept, which requires bendy carbon batteries and circuits, kind of looks like a compact—a major departure from the tablet format we’ve gotten so used to.
Considering the symbiosis currently occurring between the fashion and tech worlds, a major design makeover seems like a no-brainer for Apple, which made a multi-billion dollar name for itself based on the aesthetics of tech. It’s safe to say, whatever Apple comes up with for the big release next year, we’re all ready to be seduced by the new design.
