"Check out your go-to look in every light. From sunlight to office light—even the light of a camera flash—you will be amazed by how different your makeup looks. While doing this, you can see what little adjustments you should make to you 'main face.'" —Joanna Schlip, who's worked with Ellen Pompeo, Laura Linney, and Eva Longoria
"Experiment and get out of your box. If you only wear nude lipsticks, wear a red. If you've never worn purple eyeliner, try it. Too vague? I really mean it. Makeup is a tool to have fun with your look. Once you've 'corrected' whatever bothers you, go for it. Think of makeup like a fashion accessory, and be courageous." —Molly R. Stern, who's worked with Reese Witherspoon, Lily Collins, and Mandy Moore
“Make sure to put on concealer after tinted moisturizer or foundation, so it won't wipe the base makeup away.” —Tina Turnbow, who's worked with Keri Russell, Laura Prepon, and Mary Louise Parker
"Applying a face oil to the skin before applying makeup, instead of a makeup primer, will give your skin a natural glow and will make makeup go on so much smoother." —Lina Hanson, who's worked with Brooke Shields, Gillian Anderson, and Portia de Rossi
"Balance the face if you are doing a stronger eye with softer lips, and vice versa. You want to enhance your natural features—not wear a mask." —Julie Harris, who's worked with Julianne Hough, Lake Bell, and Idina Menzel
Take a peek inside a makeup artist's kit:
Some want you to get your brows on point.
"Nothing is more beautiful than full, healthy eyebrows. I wish everyone would let their brows grow out. When brows are over-tweezed, they can look harsh and actually age the face. A little light grooming is all that's needed." —Hung Vanngo, who's worked with Katy Perry, Kendall Jenner, and Selena Gomez
"In the past few years, we've seen a great focus on bold eyebrows, with the likes of Cara Delevingne and Anastasia Beverly Hills gaining popularity in the social media world. However, I still meet many clients who have no knowledge of how to fill in their brows and the huge benefits it offers. I would like to see people embrace their eyebrows more and learn how to fill them in properly based on their unique face and particular brow shapes." —Carissa Ferreri, who's worked with Gina Rodriguez and Bailee Madison
Of course, the pros agree on skin-care.
"Start prepping your skin before putting on makeup. Skin-care is crucial for makeup to look its best and last for a long time. I start with a pad and cleansing water. Then, I tone the skin according to the person's skin type. Next, I use mist to dampen the skin and follow up with a serum. After, I use a de-puffing eye cream and massage it onto the eye area. Then, go over with a gel moisturizer. Lastly, I prime the skin." —Joseph Carrillo, who's worked with Alexa Chung, Portia Doubleday, and Lily Rabe
“One of the things that I would love women to do more of is prepping the skin before any make up application by using a great quality moisturizer with SPF. One of my favorites at the moment is the Shiseido Ibuki Protective Moisturizer Broad Spectrum SPF 18. This moisturizer corrects the appearance of blemish marks and the unevenness of visible pores, while hydrating and protecting your skin from the sun.” —Ermahn Ospina, who's worked with Sarah Michelle Gellar, Carla Gugino, and Rosario Dawson
"Apart from making my life a lot easier, I think clients would be amazed at the difference of how fresh, smooth, and flawless their makeup would look if they came to me with a clean, exfoliated, and hydrated face. A quick but diligent rub down with a clean, hot, damp face flannel to get rid of any loose dead, dry skin followed by a light hydrating moisturizer is the perfect prep." —Jo Strettell, who's worked with Emily Ratajkowski, Demi Moore, and Cobie Smulders
