Candy Cane Eye Liner Takes Holiday Makeup Up A Notch

I thought glittery wings were as festive as it gets when it comes to holiday beauty ideas, but a new makeup trend is proving me wrong. Beauty bloggers are taking standard cat eyes to another level with what they're calling "candy cane eye liner." And the look is exactly what it sounds like: Swapping out black liquid liner for white and red ones, these bloggers are creating wings that look exactly like the seasonal peppermint-y treat—and the results are unexpectedly appealing. I may even have to try this out for Allure's annual holiday party.

To create the effect, a traditional cat-eye shape is drawn on with white liquid liner, like Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Snow. Then, using red liquid liner, thick and thin diagonal lines are drawn over the white wing to mimic the stripes of a candy cane. And yes, red liquid liner does exist. NYX Cosmetics Vivid Brights Liner in Vivid Fire is one of our favorites and it's just $7. A red liquid lipstick applied with a tiny liner brush can also be used in a pinch, just be sure to check that it's safe for use on and around the eyes. Some of the beauty bloggers outline the candy cane eye liner with a black liner. However, as you will see with these examples, you certainly don't have to.
