Delta’s New Luggage Tags Just Made Holiday Travel Much Easier

Just in time for the nightmarish experience that is holiday travel, Delta is unveiling a genius airport upgrade that will have you tweeting praise hands emoji like it’s nobody’s business. Finally, there are trackable luggage tags.

Ask anyone who’s ever lost a suitcase knows, tracking down your bag—not to mention the last tube of your now discontinued favorite lipstick that it contained (true story)—can be a major pain. In a world where mirrors can analyze your skin and flash tats can turn you into a touch pad, you’d think we’d be able to find a simple suitcase.

Well, now we can—but it didn’t come cheap. As part of a $50 million (that’s a lot of lipsticks) upgrade, Delta is embedding a tiny microchip and antenna into the paper luggage tags that the airline sticks to all of our checked bags. The chip works like a tiny GPS tracker, so airline officials can track your bag from that mysterious conveyor belt it disappears on when you drop it off to the cargo hold of your plane to the carousel at baggage claim. And because you might be anal about keeping an eye on your precious cargo throughout flight delays, layovers, and various airport mishaps, you can even have that information sent right to your phone or pull up a map to see your bag in realtime. Total travel peace of mind. According to a report from NBC News, United and Alaska Airlines are also working on similar tracking techniques.

The upgrade is bound to make holiday travel a lot more seamless for everyone—especially those of us normally trying to cram a carry-on for fear of losing some of our more precious items. Bring on the extra outfit options and full-size beauty products and insert praise hands emoji here.
