It’s no secret that we believe in the power of a kickass hair day. The help of a good colorist can do wonders for your look, your attitude and, by extension, your life. And apparently, it can also contribute to your rise to Hollywood stardom, at least if you have Amy Adams' red hair— and the talent of the actress who rocks it.
Adams, who we know and love as the quirky redhead who’s appeared in classics like American Hustle, The Fighter and Enchanted, is actually a natural blonde. (If you don't believe me, watch The Wedding Date, which stars another famous redhead, Debra Messing, to see Adam’s portrayal as the ditzy blonde baby sis.) But when Adams got to Hollywood, she confessed in a recent TimesTalk, she realized that all the pretty dumb blonde stereotypes she was encountering could be easily fixed with a bottle of hair dye. "The minute I went red, it was like, 'quirky' instead of flirtatious and dumb," she says of her luck with getting parts. “It was really fascinating to see just one element of yourself change people’s perception and that became a very powerful tool for me, even in my acting."
More celebrities spilling their secrets:
Amy Adams' red hair has helped her built one hell of an impressive resumé—the “quirky” actress has been nominated for five Oscars and seven Golden Globes, and she has taken home two of the latter. Damn girl. It’s crazy to think that she may never have gotten the chance to show off her chops if it weren’t for a simple color change. “As I’ve grown as a woman and grown as an actress, these other doors have opened. It’s a real gift at 42 to get to tell stories about strong, complicated, at times sad women,” she said. “These roles are really fleshed out characters. It’s wonderful.” Here’s to more of these fully fleshed out and multi-tonal characters and less of the one-dimensional stereotypes and labels we’re used to.
