I still remember when the hardest decision I had to make in elementary school was picking between a dolphin or polar bear Lisa Frank folder for my homework. Naturally, Lisa Frank hair is my newest obsession. The latest rainbow hair-color trend to take over Instagram brings my favorite childhood folder (I chose dolphin) to 2016 in a way that I completely support. Just like the colorful designs of my youth, hair is dyed with basically every color in the ROYGBIV spectrum with pink taking the place of red. I can't get enough of Caitlin Ford's take on the new hair-color trend, so I went straight to the hairstylist herself to get the scoop on Lisa Frank hair.
Ford was, of course, inspired by the '90s revival that's happening right now. (We're look at you, chokers and glitter). "What child of the '90s can forget the iconic colors of Lisa Frank? As a hairstylist, it seems natural to want to translate that into hair," she tells Allure.
I love how the colors aren't in-your-face bright. Instead, they're a more chill version of the rainbow I could stare at for hours. Surprisingly, these softer colors were more utilitarian than visually appealing. Ford chose to not go super-bright because the more muted tones are easier to remove, which is a plus for people who like to change their hair color frequently. "I love working with softer color palettes because it means I can use the gentlest measures to remove these colors should my clients change their minds later," she says.

Luckily, the model's hair was already blonde, so Ford could get right to adding the rainbow array of hair dyes. However, if you plan to try out Lisa Frank hair and your hair isn't blonde, Ford warns that you have to be prepared for the lightening process. "Pastel looks always require that the hair be lightened to the blondest shade before the color can be applied," she says.
Ford recommends going to a stylist who has experience with doing vibrant colors. Once you find the right person to make your rainbow Lisa Frank hair dreams come true, be sure to show them a picture so they can get a right idea of what placement and color scheme you're going for. Not all Lisa Frank hair is created equal. "Keep in mind that these sorts of color designs are completely unique to the person who creates them and the person that wears them," Ford says. "It will never be 100 percent the same, so be open to other interpretations of the Lisa Frank look." Tbh, I'm open to all of them.
