MMA Fighter Drastically Cuts Hair to Make Weight

We’ve done some extreme (okay, crazy) things in the name of beauty. But never something so wild as MMA fighter Samantha Diaz who drastically cut off all her hair in order to compete.

In the world of Mixed Martial Arts (MMA fighting)—you know, the kind of badass throw downs athletes like Ronda Rousey and Holly Holm have helped to make mainstream girl power events—making your weight class is important. In fact, it’s everything. Ideally, you want to be within ounces of the upper limit putting you in the position to be the biggest and strongest girl in your category. In order to squeeze into weight class restraints, MMA fighters will go to serious lengths fasting or intentionally overheating to help them sweat out their water weight before a weigh in.

But before her first official weigh in as a professional fighter, 23-year-old Diaz went the extra mile for her cause. In a desperate attempt to shed those last few ounces, she grabbed a pair of scissors and lobbed off almost a foot of her thick mane. Girlfriend is committed.

Luckily for Diaz, the blunt lob she ended up with is on trend. Oh, and the three ounces of hair she shed landed her right in the sweet spot of her weight class.

Now that’s what we call a smart beauty move.
