Nicole Kidman, Lupita Nyong'o, and More Appear UnRetouched in the 2017 Pirelli Calendar

For those of us not well versed in the luxury tire industry (mad respect if you are) the annual Pirelli calendar gifted to the brand’s high-end clients every year is somewhat of a big deal. Last year, it unpredictably became a big deal for the fashion industry, too, when photographer Annie Leibovitz took over the art direction for the 2016 calendar (it was from that shoot that we were all gifted the gorgeous and subtly powerful nude shot of Amy Schumer.) The understated and totally real 2016 images were a major departure from past years, which featured glossy shots of scantily clad super models you’d expect from the world of luxury cars. This year, not only is Pirelli keeping up with the trend towards more inclusivity, they’re upping the ante on capturing real AF beauty.

Following in Leibovitz’s stripped down footsteps, photographer Peter Lindbergh shot Hollywood icons, including Nicole Kidman, Robin Wright, Uma Thurman, Julianne Moore, Kate Winslet, Lupita Nyong'o, and Penelope Cruz, in a series of raw, unretouched black and white images. Frankly, the images of wrinkles, stretch marks, and uneven skin are stunning.

In today’s world of Instagrammable perfection, seeing unretouched images is arresting—and that’s sort of the point. “In the time when women are represented in the media, in every way else, as ambassadors of perfection and youth, I thought it was important to remind everyone that there is a different beauty, more real, and truthful, and not manipulated by commercial or any other interests,” Lindbergh said at a press conference. “Beauty that speaks about individuality, courage to be yourself, and your very own sensibility. That’s my definition of a woman today. That is the goal of the calendar, to show that woman and not the stretched and manipulated [woman often shown in the media].”

In addition to the unfiltered Hollywood icons, the 2017 calendar also features young stars like Rooney Mara, Alicia Vikander, and Léa Seydoux, and even Russian professor Anastasia Ignatova, making strides towards a more inclusive definition of real beauty. Sadly, the calendar is only available to Pirelli’s clients, but luckily, we can all get a peek at the unfiltered beauty here.
