We’re by no means knocking eco-friendly makeup, but, as a general rule, the category is unified by a sense of sameness: good-for-you ingredients, sure, but also neutral shades and sheerer formulas. Enter Rituel de Fille, a tiny but mighty brand that will make you rethink everything you thought you knew about natural makeup.
“Spellbinding natural color,” reads the brand’s tagline, driving home the mystical vibe of the company, founded by sisters Caroline, Michelle, and Katherine Ramos. “We wanted to approach a naturals line from a magical, potion-making standpoint, not necessarily the eco and green side,” explains Katherine. “We wanted to bring in the ceremonial power that color has, while using a minimal and pure set of ingredients.” (Fittingly, Rituel de Fille translates to “ritual of the girl.”) All it takes is a quick glance at the product names—Devil’s Claw, Serpent de Mer, Love Spell—to understand that this is unlike any other green makeup brand out there.
But it’s not just this unique perspective that sets Rituel de Fille apart. As professional makeup artists, Michelle and Katherine recognized the importance of creating products that would translate on camera and the red carpet when it came to texture, longevity, and pigmentation. “There’s a green movement happening in the professional industry and makeup artists were excited to see an edgy, natural brand with fashion forward colors,” Michelle says of the brand’s popularity with the pros. Case in point: “I’ve been obsessed with Rituel de Fille for the last two years,” says makeup artist Fiona Stiles. “They’re a ‘natural brand,’ but they’re so bold and exciting when it comes to color. Historically, most natural brands tend to be quite neutral in their color choices, but they have interesting, trend-driven shades, which is really unique,” she adds. (For further proof of how much makeup artists heart the brand, just scroll through Instagram; the Rare Light Luminizer was recently all over the accounts of some of the biggest names in the biz.)

Still, the natural aspect of this brand shouldn’t be downplayed. The ingredients are 99 percent natural, and everything is free of parabens, phthalates, synthetic dyes, and synthetic fragrances. And because the sisters still formulate everything in-house, with no third-party labs involved, the quality control is unparalleled. But small-batch production doesn’t mean the line comes across as DIY in any way, another large reason for their success. “The products feel as elevated as anything that you would buy at the finest beauty counter—luxurious, and not slap-dash in any way,” notes Leigh Batnick Plessner, Co-Creative Director of Catbird, one of the brand’s early-on retailers. “It’s really hard to launch an independent beauty line that feels finished, and that’s often because of packaging restraints. But their packaging is beautiful and cohesive and tells a story,” says Plessner.
Looking to get in on some of this mythical makeup action? While all of the products are distinct in their own way, the Ash and Ember Eye Soot is perhaps the most unique, a multi-tasking color concocted from a blend of natural pigments and oil that works as shadow, liner, or primer. Bold lip fans will love the Forbidden Lipstick in Written in Blood (a rich red, obvi), while Plessner raves about the Inner Glow Cream Blush in Lovesick and Rapture. A comprehensive line with amazing colors, gorgeous packaging, and natural ingredients? Now that’s what we call magic.
