The Standard Hotel & Perfumer Francis Kurkdjian Just Launched Candles

For the traveler on your holiday list—or anyone who is always on PTO or OOO on yet another cool work trip—you have found the perfect gift. Allure contributor and Master French perfumer Francis Kurkdjian (the nose behind such hits as Lanvin’s Rumeur and Carven L’Eau de Toilette) recently teamed up with The Standard Hotel to launch a capsule collection of candles inspired by the three cities where you can check into the super-chic hotel: New York, Miami and Los Angeles.

Kurkdjian is no stranger to major collaborations; in the past he’s concocted dreamy, botanical-scented bubbles for the Shanghai World Expo and even an historically-legit version of Marie-Antoinette’s parfum for the Palace of Versailles. But how did he imprint the vibes of these destinations into wax (very fancy French wax at that)? For New York City, the perfumer conjured up a late-night walk along the High Line (“green herbal notes are the backbone,” he says) while Los Angeles captures an outdoor hike up to the Hollywood sign, with “suntan lotion, warm, floral, sunny and sexy” notes. Miami riffs on the perfect beach vacay (“when the hot sand tickles your toes”) with a fruity-rose scent that manages to smell incredibly sophisticated, not like cocktails at the club.

As for the best way to light up these candles? Kurkdjian has a few pointers. “Do not burn the candle more than an hour for the first use,” he says, adding that you need to give the fragrance breathing space. “What smells in a candle is not the perfume being burnt in the wick but the melted wax around it.” And you gotta groom the candle, too. “Make sure you keep the wick short, about 0.2 inch, and well centered.” Lastly, be mindful about where you place it. “The candle must be on a flat surface and away from airflow.” In fact, the bedside table of your hotel room might be the ideal spot—and conveniently the candles come in either full 6.7 ounce sizes or in a mini set you can pack in your carry-on. Or if you forget: The Standard Hotels will sell the trio in their minibars come January. Happy travels (and happy holidays), indeed.
