This 100 Years of French Beauty Video Is Très Chic

Presidents, climates, beauty trends: A lot can change in 100 years. This 100 Years of French Beauty video lets you see just how dramatically hair and makeup trends can change over the decades and the century. Most of us look back on our hairstyles from five, ten, or even two years ago with a pretty solid cringe. Unfortunately, if this video is any indication, French women don't share that pain. And we're guessing if the photo archives went back far enough, French women have had things figured out for the better part of a millenium.

It's hard to watch this 100 Years of French Beauty compilation and come away uninspired. In the span of two minutes, the WatchCut video team shows you finger waves, victory rolls, chokers, dramatic side parts, and, of course, Brigitte Bardot bangs for days—with every shade of red lipstick in between. Seeing what was in style during the trying times of the past 100 years—like the WWII-occupied France versus Vichy France looks in the side-by-side shot—is especially stirring. Beauty trends might seem superficial, but they're a reflection of culture.

The video also got us thinking about which French styles influenced Americans, and ways stateside women inspired their très chic counterparts. Was Fiona Apple's straight hair and dark lips in the '90s inspired by Euro style? Or were they doing it because of her? We'll have to brush up on our knowledge of the history of fashion and globalization, but if you're looking for more beauty inspiration from the archives, check out WatchCut's Pinterest boards for detailed behind-the-scenes looks at all their "100 Years" cuts.
