Tom Ford on Why He Wouldn't Dress Melania Trump—and Hillary Clinton

As it turns out, there was a fashion designer who refused to dress Melania Trump long before Sophie Theallet made her announcement this month. Tom Ford made this case years ago—before president elect Donald Trump joined the political arena—when he declined the opportunity to dress the future first lady.

"She's not necessarily my image," he said on Wednesday’s episode of “The View.” "Even had Hillary won, she shouldn't be wearing my clothes. They're too expensive, and I don't mean that in a bad way...but I think to relate to everybody, you shouldn't be [wearing such pricey clothes]."

Ford, a democrat who voted for Hillary Clinton, is known for his high-end glam eveningwear that generally run from $3,500 to $13,000. The high cost is reflective of the meticulous detail and craftsmanship that goes into making the garments, he said. The designer acknowledged that back in 2011, he dressed first lady Michelle Obama, who's been a champion of American fashion and emerging designers such as Jason Wu, Christian Siriano, and Brandon Maxwell.

"Michelle, I dressed once when she was going to Buckingham Palace for dinner with the Queen, and I thought that was appropriate," said Ford. "I live in London so that made sense and it was an honor."

During the election, Trump wore several expensive clothes—mostly from European brands—including a $2,190 Roksanda dress and a $1,100 Gucci “pussy bow” blouse that caused an Internet frenzy. Unlike the first lady-to-be, who purchased her campaign wardrobe off-the-rack, Clinton donned bespoke Ralph Lauren pantsuits in shades of red, white, and blue.

Multiple fashion designers have stepped up to showcase their views on dressing Trump. Designer Sophie Theallet penned an open letter that said she would not dress the future first lady, while Tommy Hilfiger had an opposite view. When asked if he would provide clothes for Trump, the designer replied, "I think Melania is a very beautiful woman and I think any designer should be proud to dress her."

As for Ford's view on whether Trump should wear extravagant garments during her tenure at the White House? The designer said, "I’m gonna leave that to Melania."
