Debbie Reynolds Has Died, One Day After Her Daughter Carrie Fisher

The world has lost two celebrity icons: Carrie Fisher and now, her mother. At the age of 84, Debbie Reynolds has died, the Associated Press reports. Like Fisher, Reynolds's cause of death was sudden and unexpected. The famed actress had a stroke the day after Fisher suffered a cardiac arrest.

The story of her death is unimaginably tragic. Reynolds was allegedly in the midst of making funeral arrangements for her daughter, along with her son Todd Fisher, when she had a stroke, TMZ reports. After Fisher called 911, Reynolds was transported to Cedars Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, according to People.

"She wanted to be with Carrie," Fisher told Variety.

Aside from Fisher, Reynolds leaves behind her granddaughter, Scream Queens actress Billie Lourd, and a legacy that will live on for decades. That includes her starring role in the 1952 classic Singin' in the Rain and 1964's The Unsinkable Molly Brown, for which she earned an Oscar nomination. Reynolds later had her own TV show, The Debbie Reynolds Show and, more recently, played Debra Messing's mother on Will and Grace and Liberace's mother on the 2015 HBO movie special Behind the Candelabra. That same year she received a SAG Life Achievement Award that was bestowed to her by her daughter. Reynolds also left her mark offscreen as the original America's Sweetheart in the '30s and '40s.

After Carrie's death, a spokesperson for the family issued a statement, saying, “It is with a very deep sadness that Billie Lourd confirms that her beloved mother Carrie Fisher passed away at 8:55 this morning. She was loved by the world and she will be missed profoundly." Reynolds herself wrote a message on Facebook, thanking fans: "Thank you to everyone who has embraced the gifts and talents of my beloved and amazing daughter. I am grateful for your thoughts and prayers that are now guiding her to her next stop."

At this time, Lourd has yet to issue her own statement but we will update this post as more information becomes available. In the meantime, celebrate Reynolds's life by reliving TCM's tribute to the icon as told by the late Carrie Fisher.
