The Critics' Choice Awards aren’t exactly known for best hair looks, but this year Kerry Washington's messy braid changed the game. The Scandal actress hit the red carpet in an glamorous angled braid just nine weeks after giving birth to her second child.
Of course Washington is naturally gorgeous, but she has celebrity hairstylist Takisha Sturdivant-Drew to thank for her vision of rock and roll hair for the awards. “I decided to style her hair in a messy side braid with certain pieces of her hair falling all around on an angle,” she says. “I wanted the hair to be young and fresh so I kept the hair on the right side falling in her face to give it a sexy feel.”

Because the makings of any hairstyle starts with a good base, Sturdivant-Drew began by shampooing her hair with Neutrogena anti residue shampoo and followed with Neutrogena triple moisture recovery mask. Style tip: To give her a wet and shinny look, she left a little of the mask in her hair to soften the texture and look. But, be careful not to leave too much or you’ll have nasty residue.
Now for deets on Kerry Washington's messy braid: Sturdivant-Drew started off by giving her a French braid on the right side in the nape area and then braided it around to the left side and finished it off with a fish bone messy braid that she pulled apart to look slightly lived-in. Finally, Sturdivant-Drew pulled pieces of her hair out and razor cut the loose ends to create an angle styled hair cut.
One thing’s for sure, we’re considering inspiration for our winter hair handled!
