Meet Amina Mucciolo—A Real Life Mermaid

You don’t have to look far to meet a real mermaid. Just go to Amina Mucciolo’s Instagram account and you’ll be dazzled by her colorful braids, backgrounds and personality. She is a brightly-colored, unapologetic unicorn.

“Color makes me so happy,” says the 33-year-old. “I see my colorful hair and I smile when I look in the mirror. I also feel the most like myself when my hair is a fun color.”

Her hair is the closest you’ll ever get to a rainbow. It’s usually a combination of blue, pink, yellow and green pastel braids made of acrylic yarn she grabbed from a craft store. Mucciolo has worn everything from ponytails, to high and low buns to long curls to waist-length braids. She’s even worn a bald head and dreadlocks. But these days her current go-to style is a look crafted by her stylist Shelley Gregory, and it includes ombre (a mix of pink and purple) clip-in extensions from Heat Free Hair, a brand that allows girls with various [textures] of curly, wavy and kinky hair to find extensions that are identical to their own natural hair.

Ask her what her favorite color is and she’ll gladly tell you it’s pink. “Pink has been my favorite color since I was a child, so I guess it just stuck,” she says. “Its such a happy sweet color. Pink is totally my neutral [color] at this point.”

Ask her about self-acceptance and her answer is bit more complicated. “Self acceptance is really something that I have to work at everyday,” she says. "Its more of a journey than a destination but its the most worthwhile journey that I’ve ever embarked on. I feel the most confident and the most beautiful when I am living in my truth.  I really believe that once you accept who you are and do things to affirm that, confidence will come a lot easier. I also think its important to realize that everyone experiences self doubt and struggles with acceptance at some point in their lives.”

Colorful braids aside, in RL Amina Mucciolo is the founder of Studio Mucci — a design company she and her husband run out of L.A. that offers colorful clothing, piñatas, garlands, tassels and anything else you can imagine that’s brightly colored. She has 133K followers, all of whom she calls mermaids and unicorns from time to time—and she encourages them live a life full of color, too.

“I think its important that women from all cultures regardless of their hair texture feel like they have the freedom to try any style or color,” she says. "And, if something as simple as seeing me in my colorful hair and clothes could put a smile on a strangers face, then its totally worth it," she says.
