Last month, a woman named by The Independent as Fadila went on vacation with her family to the south of France and stayed at a private residence with a pool. As one does when they're on vacation, she decided to take a dip, and donned her choice of swimwear — a burkini. It's here where her vacation took a turn, as she's alleging that upon seeing her in the pool in her burkini, a staff member asked all other guests to leave the pool area before the owner later requested that she and her husband refrain from swimming for the rest of their stay.
The couple was also allegedly asked to pay a cleaning fee of 490 euros (or $575), because the owner emptied and cleaned the pool after Fadila swam in it wearing her burkini. Fadila told the charity United Against Islamophobia in France (CCIF), “I was stunned because no one stopped me or said anything at all. I was disappointed, shocked, wounded by the fact that someone could be so hypocritical and wicked because of a burkini.” Though the couple refused to pay and there is no invoice for these charges, there is a report filed by the building's syndicate stating a woman in a burqa entered the pool on July 21 and refused to leave when asked.
It's important to note that burkinis are not a hygiene issue and are specifically designed for swimming — Fadila and anyone else who wishes to swim while wearing one should feel absolutely free to do so, and should never be subject to a cleaning charge because of their choice of swimwear.
