Ariel Winter has become a queen of clapping back at body-shamers. But because Internet trolls never learn, another week has brought another round of criticism for the Modern Family star to address.
Winter took to Instagram to share her frustration that her everyday fashion choices are subject to so much scrutiny. In a post featuring Notes apps screenshot and the caption "#rant," she wrote, "Something I wish people would realize…I am not TRYING to be featured on Snapchat, I am not trying to be pap'd everywhere I do, I am literally just LIVING and unfortunately, I can't do that without paparazzi following me around everyday. I'm not trying to show you my ass in shorts when I go to the grocery store. I'm trying to live my life. People wear shorts. People have wardrobe malfunctions. No one is perfect."
"I don't want people to constantly see me in the news for going to dinner, or grocery shopping, or anything," she added. "I want to be in the news when I ASK for it by going to a publicized event, or EVEN BETTER, when I have work out/coming out!"
This post appears to be inspired by the response to statements Winter gave in a recent Hollywood Reporter interview. Winter explained in the interview that her mother dressed her in revealing clothing at an early age, and that she felt sexualized as a result. She said she wore, "the smallest miniskirts, sailor suits, low-cut things, the shortest dresses you've ever seen. People thought I was 24 when I was 12. If there was going to be a nude scene when I was that age, my mother would have a thousand percent said yes."
Some critics have called Winter hypocritical for calling her mother out for dressing her in revealing clothing when Winter now sometimes makes the choice to do that herself. But in her Instagram post, Winter rightly pointed out there's a big difference between someone sexualizing a child and an adult woman deciding what to put on her body. "As a child, you do as you're told regardless of what is good for you," she wrote. I'm an ADULT now, who can make my own choices and have my own identity. And just because I DECIDE to show my body occasionally doesn't mean I'm unintelligent or that I'm talentless or that I have no self respect."
Because trolls are immortal creatures whose main source of fuel is manufactured drama, this likely won't be the last time Winter is moved to defend her apparently controversial to wear whatever she wants. We have no doubt she'll be ready with another thorough comeback.
