Emmy Awards 2017: Behind the Scenes of Yara Shahidi's Makeup Look

Yara Shahidi stepped out onto the red carpet at the Emmy Awards 2017 looking like a legit, modern-day princess. (Kate Middleton, watch out...no, really.) The diaphanous gown with fluttery sleeves, the cascade of curls, the perfectly-applied eyeliner. Makeup artist Emily Cheng, shares in her own words, the secrets behind those crisp wings — and the details on how the whole look came together:

"The dress was a custom Prada, it was just flown in from Italy a few days before, actually. So when they received it, we all got photos — myself, her hairstylist Naivasha Johnson, her stylist — and we got on the phone, we discussed ideas. Yara, of course, gets involved as well. We run everything by her and she gives input on what she likes. But we definitely based [the beauty look] off the dress, and because the dress was so feminine and pretty, we wanted to do something a little more edgy to balance everything out.

Her skin is super nice, but I always stress the importance of prepping. This morning we started by using the two-step Chanel Firming Flash Eye Revitalizer. You roll on the product and then you put the patches on, which is good because it means they really stay put. I've used a ton of patches before and generally they've already slid down to your neck after just five minutes. It's a really nice way to start the day; we take 15-20 minutes just doing skin care and I'll give her a really nice face massage, then I'll blot her face with a tissue to make sure she doesn't look too shiny.

When it comes to the past looks I've done for Yara, you'll often see colorful liner, or playful shades on her lips, but this time around, since the dress was already so pretty, we thought that maybe we'd go with a graphic liner, but to make it not so sharp. Instead of just using a liquid liner, I created the shape by using a liquid pen liner and a gel liner, and then once I got the shape, I went over the edges with a black eye shadow to soften up the edges. Sometimes with liquid liner it can have a shiny finish, which looks quite sharp, but topping it with shadow just blurs it slightly. When you look at it, though, it doesn't look like a blurred line, because we still made a very clean wing. It just doesn't look at intense.

I then did a pop of this really beautiful bright, bright gold eye shadow in the inner corners of her eyes to tie in the gold belt of her dress. It also added a little element of color, which she loves. Then I used that same gold shade on her cheekbones and the bow of her lips.

We kept her lips really nude and natural. We took whatever was left on her foundation brush and just kinda of brushed and pressed it it over the lips. Then I used Chanel Rouge Coco Gloss in Burnt Sugar. I actually had another shade in mind, but when I whipped this one out she was like, Oh, that's my favorite! It's called Burnt Sugar and it looks a little bit more rosy-red, but on her, on top of her lips, I just put it in the center of the mouth and pressed it in with my fingers and blotted with a tissue so it's not too glossy, and that's all we did. It looks like a nude, but with the slightest hint of color.

When I work with Yara, her mom is always there and they have the best energy. They're like sisters, they even look sisters. We actually got ready at a hotel this time, and her dad came by after. She creates a playlist in the morning. It's something she's kind of known for it, because she loves her music. She always creates a different playlist for each event, but it's always super relaxing, and really nice, and we have a great time getting ready. And then at the end, we take 10-15 sessions which are my favorite part."
