Nicki Minaj Calls Out Magazines That Made Her Change Her Hair

Nicki Minaj is speaking out against the cultural appropriation rampant in the fashion and beauty industries. In a tweet on Thursday morning, the rapper criticized magazines that have stopped her from wearing certain hairstyles on their pages, then turned around and allowed women of other races to wear those same styles.

"For years, fashion mags would change my hair for their covers but allow women of a diff race to wear the exact style on the cover," she tweeted. When a loyal fan replied that "they can't do it now cause you a #Queen," Minaj countered, "Actually, they're still doing it babe 😔."

She also replied with a thumbs-up emoji when another fan wrote, "White women gotta wear it first so they can say Black women was inspired by that look," and retweeted a fan who posted side-by-side pictures of a black woman and the cartoon character Betty Boop both wearing finger waves, implying that the hairstyle was originally worn primarily by women of color long before it was drawn on Betty Boop and came to be more closely associated with white women in the 1920s.

Though it's unclear what exactly prompted Minaj to tweet about this topic, it's no secret that the fashion and beauty industries have long been accused of engaging in cultural appropriation.

White celebrities, including Katy Perry, Iggy Azalea, and the Kardashian/Jenner family, are among the accused.

This isn't the first time that The Pinkprint artist has taken a stand against the industry's questionable practices. In July, she called out a company selling "Nicki Minaj-Inspired" wigs for capitalizing on her image and signature style without her consent.

And earlier this year, Minaj accused shoe designer Giuseppe Zanotti of racism after he allegedly named designs after her but refused to collaborate with her on a collection. "This is wonderful. #GiuseppeZanotti seems to think it's ok to name his sneakers after me, but his PR says they won't take our call. Lol," she tweeted at the time. "The racism & disrespect won't b tolerated."
