I Compared Mascara from Too Faced and its Drugstore Dupe from L'Oréal Paris

Mascara is a heated debate in the Allure offices. Not all mascaras work for everyone. All lashes and lash needs are unique! Par examplé: somehow it's consistently decreed that a certain pink and green tubed drugstore mascara is the end-all-be-all of good mascaras, but that shit has never ever worked for my short wispy eyeball-bangs (lash privilege!).

I may be a bit of a mascara snob but I'm going to just say that my lashes were made for luxury... which is to say, they need help — the kind of volumizing and lengthening help that generally comes from Sephora rather than a late night drugstore crawl haul (trust me, I've tried them all).

But look, mascara is expensive — more so when you actually replace your tube every three-to-six months, as you're supposed to. I do kind of like when it gets a bit thicc after a few weeks but that is not the point here.

The point is that one best-selling mascara which claims to be better than sex has a drugstore dupe, according to whisperings around certain internet forums. Even on sight L'Oréal Paris' Lash Paradise mascara does look like it's in its best "Better Than Sex Mascara" Halloween costume. I love a good twin story, so I grabbed a tube of each and got to slathering up my eyeball bangs to test each out.

The tiny wand belongs to Too Faced's Better Than Sex Mascara (I had a mini one!) and the longer wand is L'Oreal's Lash Paradise. The brushes are pretty similar, with Better Than Sex's slightly thicker and more hourglass-shaped overall. Lash Paradise has a bit more bristle density in its wand.

OK, so as you can see... my lashes look pretty damn... the same. To be fair, my right eye has some sort of cowlick situation going on (lashlick?) but never mind that. Both formulas were equally lengthening to me. I will say that Better Than Sex seemed to layer more evenly and Lash Paradise got a bit unwieldy after about three or four combs through. I did like the Lash Paradise brush better since the bristles weren't as long, so it was less messy to apply. Throughout the day, the wear for both was comparable. Better Than Sex flaked a bit and Lash Paradise smudged a tad — nothing egregious though. Both removed easily with my makeup-removing oil cleanser.

So, drama lovers, sorry to say... these pink tubes are neck and neck. I wouldn't necessarily claim that one is LEAGUES better than the other, however, the price discrepancy is significant. Better Than Sex is $23 (and the mini version is $12), and Lash Paradise is $10. So, there's that. At this point, the Better Than Sex mascara has been and will continue to keep Too Faced's lights on because it's so damn popular and those who have mascara loyalty will obviously continue to buy it. But should you find yourself targeted by TSA deciding to trash your toiletries, hit up the Duty-Free and pick up this L'Oréal jam. Or just snag one on a drugstore crawl and see for yourself.
