Golden Globes 2018: How to Support the Activists' Causes

Last night at the Golden Globes, stars wore black to denounce sexual misconduct and express support of Time's Up, an organization recently formed by women in entertainment to fight for gender parity in Hollywood and beyond. Some stars took the platform provided by the awards show a step further, opting to invite activists in a range of fields as their guests. Here's who they are, and how to support their causes.

Actress Amy Poehler walked the red carpet with Saru Jayaraman, an attorney, author, and advocate for restaurant workers. She's the co-founder and co-director of the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United (ROC United), as well as director of the Food Labor Research Center at University of California, Berkeley. ROC United fights to improve working conditions and quality of life for the country's 14 million restaurant workers — you can find out more and support the organization's work here.

Actress Meryl Streep invited Ai-jen Poo, the director of the National Domestic Workers Alliance, to join her at the Globes. As Streep said on the red carpet, “I think that people are aware now of a power imbalance. And it’s something that leads to abuse. It’s led to abuse in our own industry, and it’s led to abuse across the domestic workers’ field of work." Actress Michelle Williams attended with Tarana Burke, the founder of #MeToo and senior director of the nonprofit Girls for Gender Equity. "#MeToo is really about everybody," Burke said on the red carpet. "We want ultimately for women to know that we support them wherever they are, so I’m here to represent survivors around the world." Actress Emma Watson's guest was Marai Larasi, executive director of Imkaan, a U.K.-based organization that fights violence against black and minority women. “Every time somebody speaks out, it just creates a bit of a crack in that wall... [W]omen in Hollywood have an opportunity to amplify the issues," Larasi said on the red carpet. Learn more about what Imkaan does here.

Actress Susan Sarandon attended the ceremony with Rosa Clemente, an Afro-Latinx community organizer and independent journalist who was the vice presidential running mate of Green Party candidate Cynthia McKinney in the 2008 U.S. Presidential election. She's worked on causes including youth voter engagement and immigrants' rights — learn about Clemente and book her for speaking engagements here.
