As if my obsession with green juice couldn't get any more complex, my post-workout drink of choice is practically seeping into my skin-care routine. (Well, kind of.) Allow me to explain: A couple of years ago, we reported on the superfood skin-care craze and how, seemingly overnight, beauty brands began pumping dark, leafy greens (as in real vegetables) into moisturizers, cleansers, and even face masks. The fad took off so quickly it seemed like every time I stepped into Sephora, a new "superfood" cream would appear on the shelves.
Why the obsession with green stuff? According to the experts, vegetables (kale, spinach, and even alfalfa) are packed with antioxidants, which help boost skin's hydration and fight off free radicals. "Both kale and spinach are rich in a variety of potent antioxidants that help reduce skin inflammation," Joshua Zeichner, the director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City, previously told Allure. "Superfoods provide our body with the building blocks it needs to function optimally, and now their benefits are being delivered directly to the skin topically."
After hearing all of that, I was (and always will be) on team Green Juice Skin Care. And thanks to vegan skin-care brand Youth to the People, repping my team is as easy as slathering on a minty green-colored cream before I leave my apartment every morning. The moisturizer, Youth to the People's Kale + Spinach Green Tea Hyaluronic Acid Age Prevention Moisture Cream, is made with spinach and kale, and is spiked with a heavy dose hydrating hyaluronic acid. Talk about moisturizing.
Despite its laundry list of good-for-your-skin ingredients, the cream itself is actually quite lightweight in texture. Oh, and the best part? It's slightly cooling-on-contact, which makes it perfect for early-morning wake-up calls (or, you know, those days when you have to go to work). Sadly, it doesn't smell exactly like a kale smoothie, but if you sniff hard enough (don't hurt yourself), you'll get whiffs of what may resemble a produce stand every now and then.
