Target Adds Black-Owned Lipstick Brand The Lip Bar to Shelves

Black-owned beauty brand The Lip Bar, which has built a reputation for inclusivity and killer lipsticks, is launching at Target this spring. The brand was created by former Wall Street financial analyst Melissa Butler after she spent years frustrated that women like her weren't widely represented in the beauty industry. "Everyone deserves to have representation. Without it, we are left seeking validation," Butler said in a statement about the brand. While in the brand' early beginnings Butler presented The Lip Bar to Shark Tank, the sharks slept on the brand, missing out on what's now worth nearly close to half a million.

Inclusivity and diversity have fast been becoming standard requirements for big beauty brands — shades catering exclusively to lighter skin tones just don't cut it in 2018. As the industry catches up, there are some beauty brands that have been challenging industry norms all along, like The Lip Bar.

Finally, there's the organic collection of lip glosses ($14), which nourish like a balm and finish like a lip glaze.

The empowering beauty brand with its killer collection of shades is already available at 44 Target stores and will be launching in 100 more this May (with two shades exclusive to Target: Unimpressed, a liquid matte lip color, and Baddie, a lip gloss).
