Squiggle brows, fishtail arches, and Kim Possible-themed eyeliner are just a few prime examples that represent eye makeup in 2018. It's safe to say we're now in a generation where just about anything goes (even eye shadow inspired by Arizona Iced Tea), and there's no denying we have Instagram to thank for that. The ultra-popular social platform has become a hub for professional and self-taught makeup artists to exhibit their talent and inspire others to go as big and bold as they want to. If you feel like wearing six different neon eyeliners at once, no one's stopping you. And if glossy lids and lightning brows are your daytime beauty jam, by all means, do you.
This all to say: We would never have made it to this progressive era of eye makeup if it weren't for inspiration from years past. We have the '90s to thank for all the moody, mauve tones and grungy black liner that's had a resurgence; the '70s and '80s to credit for disco-bright shadows, bold lipstick, and punk eyeliner; and the '50s deserve a nod for bringing us winged eyeliner, á la the lovely Greta Garbo. These legendary makeup moments have all led us up to the iconic eye lewks we see littered all over Instagram feeds, glossy magazine pages, and runways today.
