Anyone who's used the category-disrupting Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer understands why it won Allure's 2017 Readers' Choice Award and the Best of Beauty Award in both 2016 and 2017. As our own Digital Deputy Beauty Director, Sophia Panych, says, "It's puzzlingly lightweight, surprisingly quiet (it makes a soft whooshing sound that won't wake up your significant other in the next room), and ultimately the most powerful blow-dryer I've ever used." And yet, despite thousands of people happily handing over $400 for it — it was one of Sephora's best-selling products last year — Dyson saw room for improvement.
On April 28, the famously futuristic appliance brand is launching the Dyson Supersonic Professional. Previously available only to stylists, the new model takes everything that makes the Supersonic unique and then makes it even more exceptional. Like the original, the Supersonic Professional has a V9 digital motor combined with Air Multiplier technology for super-fast drying, intelligent heat-control measures, and a lightweight feeling (thanks to the motor being in the handle). However, this one has new and improved features that consumers are bound to love as much as the pros.
First, the filter is now magnetic, removable, and washable; it even comes with a filter-cleaning brush. And you'll know exactly when you need to clean the filter because the Supersonic Professional is constantly measuring its own performance and has airflow lights that flash when the filter needs cleaning. The concentrator attachment has been re-engineered to be wider and thinner for more precision, and it now has twice the magnetic strength as its predecessor; the same goes for the magnetic strength of the other two included attachments, a smoothing nozzle and diffuser. It even has a longer (now 11-foot) cable. Whether or not it's even better at crisping chicken skin than the original is yet to be determined.
All of these upgrades mean the Supersonic Professional will cost $450 — $50 more than the original. But if it performs even better than its beloved forerunner, it's arguably worth the investment.
The Dyson Supersonic Professional will be available on dyson.com on April 28.
