Short of turning oneself into Beyoncé, waking up flawless typically requires some combination of ancient beauty wisdom and modern skin-care science that results in an often elaborate nighttime skin-care routine.
Luckily, there are shortcuts, like beauty pillowcases, which may not promise to turn you into, say, Queen Bey overnight, but do claim to help reduce acne, prevent wrinkles, and keep hair shiny. The Night Dual-Sided Beauty Pillowcase claims to do all of the above — even if your indecisive skin is oily one day and parched the next.
The secret is in — you guessed it — its dual sides. One side of the pillowcase is mulberry silk, a fabric often touted as a way to keep your hair from turning into a frizzball overnight. According to the brand, the silky side helps your skin maintain the ideal level of moisture as your skin rubs against your pillow at night. Side two is made of bamboo fibers, which happen to be moisture-wicking. By sleeping on this side, you're theoretically keeping your skin and hair from over-oiling and helping to prevent breakouts.
So, for $100 does it actually work? "Pillowcases seem to have more benefit for hair (to maintain the style, prevent knots and tangling, etc.) than they do for the skin," Shari Marchbein, a board-certified dermatologist in New York City, tells Allure. That said, the idea might be a little more effective for those with oily skin, she adds. In that case, fabrics like the bamboo side of the Night pillowcase, which are "spun from long fibrous strands as opposed to cotton, which has short coarse fibers," can be helpful for wicking moisture as you snooze.
To sleep your way to better skin, there are two key things you can do, she says. "More important than the fabric on the pillow would be not sleeping on your face at all. Dermatologists recommend sleeping on your back, as prolonged pressure from either stomach or side sleeping can actually introduce wrinkles and fine lines into the skin," she explains.
If you're not a back sleeper, getting your best skin overnight starts with retinoids. "I'm a firm believer that starting to use retinoids early to help build collagen is one of the best things you can do for your skin," Marchbein says. For oily skin, she recommends talking to your derm about prescription solution for the optimal effectiveness. "If you are dry or sensitive, Differin Gel 0.1% is a great option as it's not as drying," she says.
Follow up with a moisturizer. Marchbein recommends CeraVe Moisturizing Cream, Simple Skincare Skin Quench Sleeping Cream, and Neutrogena Hydroboost Water Gel.
Now prepare to wake up ***flawless.
