If you're ever looked at someone with a completely different hair texture than yours and thought to yourself, I could never achieve that amazing color with my hair type, two Illinois-based colorists are about to prove you happily wrong. In a project called "Blurred Lines," hair pros Melissa Rose and Aymen set out to show their class that people with every kind of hair texture "can be proud wearers of beautiful vivids without disrupting the integrity of the hair." They gave two volunteers with totally different starting points incredible jewel-toned waves, and they filmed the entire process.
"Hair texture can indirectly translate to what products need to be used and to what levels I may push the envelope," Rose tells Allure. "For example, a client with baby fine, soft hair may require me to lift much slower and in separate appointments to ensure their hair health. Likewise, someone with very dense, thick, curly hair would be the driving force of why I choose a specific placement. I would need to compensate for density to ensure the most complementing placement so each tone has a time to shine and colors don’t get lost."
In addition to starting out with different hair colors, Rose's model had a fine, straight texture, and Aymen's model had thick, curly, natural hair. That's why she and Aymen, who specializes in textured hair, used completely different formulas to achieve similar results. "The formula I used on my model was a metallic base using Pulp Riot high-speed silver toner," he tells Allure, followed by blends of Pulp Riot's Lilac, Aquatic, Nirvana, and Mercury colors, all of which were mixed with Brazilian Bond Builder.
Rose, on the other hand, lightened and toned her model's hair with both Oligo and Redken formulas, followed by Iroiro colors Platinum, Mint Green, Lilac, Light Blue, and Pink. "I ensured that each color could touch and blend on the hair strand and not only not negate one another, but create a new hue that would optimize an iridescent, metallic blend," she explains.
