The Best Sunglasses With UV Protection for Summer 2018

Slathering your face with an SPF product is surely one of the best ways to protect your skin from harmful UV rays. But it's important to remember that there are other precautions you can make that are just as easy — namely, throwing on a pair of sunglasses. According to board-certified dermatologist Tanya Kormeili, MD, the skin around the eyes is notoriously delicate, making it even more prone to sun damage than other areas. "In the sun we tend to squint, and the squinting is the result of the activation of muscles around the eyes which lead to those deep wrinkles," says Kormeili. This means that sunglasses not only help by physically shielding the skin but also by preventing wrinkles that form from continuous squinting. That said, not all sunglasses are created equal. Kormeili notes that the most important factor when looking for sunglasses is a clear indication that the product blocks 100 percent of UV rays, adding that oversized glasses or wrap-around styles will best protect the sides of the eyes from tricky lateral UV exposure. And as far as what to avoid? Vivian Bucay, a dermatologist in San Antonio previously told Allure that metal frames "reflect sunlight on the tops of the cheeks, causing them to burn," noting that going with plastic frames will help you avoid sun spots and other damage. If this all feels like an overwhelming amount of information, don't stress. We've pulled together a handful of sunglasses below that not only meet dermatologist requirements but are cute enough to ensure you'll actually remember to wear them.
