Halloween might be the biggest DIY holiday of the year, with countless beauty tutorials on how to style your look to be that of a mermaid, or perhaps, like Jenna Dewan Tatum, a unicorn. But all that glitter, highlighting and bedazzling doesn't come cheap, celebrity or not. Well, if you've been wondering how much the average American spent on Halloween this year—and even if you haven't—this figure will still be a surprise, we think.
On average, Americans spent $82.93 per person getting into the Halloween spirit, according to the National Retail Federation’s annual survey. That number is up from the $74.34 Americans spent last year. Why the reason for the price spike? The rising costs of Halloween gear could play a role. While the study doesn't draw any conclusions, judging from this writer's Halloween-centric social media feed over the past few days, it wouldn't be surprising if Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat played a role in the uptick. The anticipation of having your costume or decorated house broadcasted across someone else's feed might incentivize people to splurge a little more.
In case you still need it, let the Scene show you how to transform into a Lisa Frank-inspired character:
The most alarming numbers from the study, however, are on a national level. In 2016, Americans are spending $3.1 billion on costumes, $2.5 billion on candy, $2 billion on decorations, and $390 million on greeting cards. To put that into perspective, those numbers combined are significantly more than the $4.45 billion Americans spent on Thanksgiving last year. It's also the highest amount Americans have ever spent on Halloween historically. So if you're still wondering how much the average American spent for Halloween this year, the answer: a bit too much. Besides, why buy when you can DIY? (Sorry, but we had to.)
