Introducing Napflix, The Online TV Channel That Encourages Siestas

If there is one thing Spaniards take seriously, it’s siestas. A foreign concept to us Americans (naps in the middle of the day, huh?), this couple-hour break has long been part of Spanish culture, and now, there's a new service to even help you ease into that very nap: yes, launched this week, a free service called Napflix is basically a TV channel featuring boring videos.

Geared toward helping people catch some zzzz’s between 2 p.m. and 4 p.m., Napflix videos include two-hour lectures from a physics professor at Yale, the 1992 Tour de France, a ski jumping contest, a few curling games, an entire baseball match, and 54-minute clip of chickens turning on a rotisserie. Even if, say, four hours of the World Chess Championship match in Chennai isn't boring to you in particular, there's more to choose from—a Tupperware documentary, anyone? Here's a short taste of what's on offer:

"We all know the feeling of insomnia. Your body wants to sleep but your mind is still awake and active,” creators Víctor de Tena and Francesc Bonet explained on the channel. "There’s a lot of videos on YouTube that we were able to put on our channel that will really help people to sleep. We choose the content based on how boring it is, or for the elevator music that sometimes goes with it," de Tena later told Spanish news site Cadena Ser.

Aside from dull content, Napflix will also play more spa-like content including waves crashing on a beach, a crackling fireplace, cars driving through the rain, and eight hours of a candle burning down. "We’re taking siesta to the next level," added De Tena. The content is available online all over the world, so it can correspond with your personal nap time...if you’re lucky enough to get one.
