American Music Awards 2016: Selena Gomez Delivers Touching Acceptance Speech

Selena Gomez surprised fans Sunday night by appearing at the American Music Awards 2016—and looking seriously stunning, as always. The singer had announced in August that she would be taking a break from the limelight following the wrap of her Revival tour to focus on her health. She was suffering from anxiety and depression—for her, side effects of Lupus. (She revealed she was diagnosed with the autoimmune disease back in 2015.)

At the American Music Awards 2016, Gomez quietly returned to the public eye. But she wasn't just a gorgeous guest. She also won Best Female Artist — Pop/Rock. In a touching speech, seriously, there wasn't a dry eye in the room including Lady Gaga's, she explained her current mental state, referencing the overwhelming fame, criticism and exposure she's had in her career. (The singer was a Disney star, before launching a music career, and then the very public girlfriend of Justin Bieber.) She revealed that despite seemingly having everything together, she was "absolutely broken." So, she got help. "I'm not trying to get validation, nor do I need it anymore," a teary-eyed Gomez said to audience cheers. "If you are broken, you do not have to stay broken. And if that's anything, whether you respect me or not, that's one thing you should know about me: I care about people."

Fans loved her speech, and took to Twitter say how much they appreciate her honesty.

It was a brave moment, and one we're sure people will be talking about for a long time.

Now, the most surprising American Music Awards looks of all time:
