Dua Lipa: Everything You Need To Know About the Pop Princess

A couple months ago, I packed into a teeny-tiny venue with a bunch of teens to see Dua Lipa perform. I'd be lying if I said I knew who she was before I got to Baby's All Right, in Brooklyn. My tickets were bought with the intention of seeing the bespectacled singer/songwriter who came after her, Kevin Garrett. But in the small, sweaty room, I was pleasantly surprised by the British pop singer's amazingly catchy songs and stay-put makeup. As a beauty editor, I probably paid more attention to the latter than her crowd of teen fans did. As she danced around on stage, her makeup seemed to stay completely intact. I was in awe.

When I saw down with her this week for a quick interview, Lipa informed me that by the time she got back to her dressing room, that wasn't quite the case. "You know what, because the lights are so bright you can’t really tell that by the time I come off stage, I’m red in the face," she tells Allure. "So [my makeup] doesn’t stay on that well. It does come off. It doesn’t melt, though. My mascara still stays intact. But other than that, I’m a mess." She took a break from touring with Troye Sivan (another singer popular with today's youth, for those of us over the age of 21) to tell us all about her new love for skincare and her not-so-secret makeup trick.

On her beauty routine changing now that she’s on tour: On stage, I tend to use more matte products because when I get all sweaty, I don’t want to be really, really shiny at the same time. That reflects a lot of light and I’d look like a glazed doughnut. [Off stage,] I try not to not wear makeup as much as I can. I need to give my skin a break. I guess it was always important for me to take my makeup off before bed, but now, it’s like to a whole ‘nother level. I’m traveling so much, and my skin gets so tired, so anything I can take like eye cream, face cream, face mist, oils—just anything to keep my skin moisturized because flying dries it out. Traveling is the worst for skin, and it shows instantly. Once you’re working non-stop, you can instantly see it.

On being the latest teen idol: If you can be a role model doing what you do....For me, my aim is to just be as good as possible. If people do look up to me, I have to set the best example I can. I guess in a way that makes me the best version of me when it’s about someone else as well. Especially for “Blow Your Mind”, the whole video is a campaign for niceness. It’s like the girl gang that everyone can be a part of.

On her go-to beauty look: I try to keep it as youthful as possible. I get a bit insecure if I feel like there’s too much makeup on my face or if I feel like I’m cakey. I love lashes, so individual lashes are my thing—the more the merrier, the fluffier the better. [Other than that], I try to keep it really natural with tinted moisturizer, concealer, mascara, and lip gloss—glittery lip gloss. But a dark lip is nice—especially for [fall]. I like this one from M.A.C. that’s dark brown.

On her ‘90s vibe: I’d like to think [I have one]. I’m obsessed with that era. '90s Kate Moss, Chloe Sevigny, and Drew Barrymore are my favorite. (Editor's note: Dua knows how to wear burgundy eye shadow and a choker better than anyone I know.)

On her unexpected beauty trick: I use a toothbrush for loads of different things. Well, I don’t use the same toothbrush for loads of different things. I have a couple. I use a toothbrush on my lips as a lip scrub, occasionally I use a toothbrush with some dark eye shadow on my eye brows if I want to fill them in. And if I want a really thick, textured look with mascara, I put one on my lashes, as well. At home [in London], I discovered it after running out of makeup supplies and trying to make do with what I have. Now, I still use it.

Dua Lipa's self-titled debut album will be out on February 10. In the meantime, you can listen to her singles, like my personal favorite, "Hotter Than Hell", on your go-to streaming service now. TBH since I added them to my running playlist, I actually get excited to go to the gym.
