Unfortunate fact: Women are objectified all the time. Sometimes it’s obvious (think the rampant fat shaming or hair discrimination we’re still trying to fight against on social media and IRL), sometimes it’s sneakier (obsessing over our beauty routines can easily cross a line into overhyping our physical appearances). And sometimes objectification happens when you’re just trying to have a quiet commute.
Supermodel Lindsey Wixson (you’ve seen her strutting down the major runways at just about every fashion week event since she was 15-years-old) took to Instagram to report the Uber ride from hell. In her post, she describes how she felt totally objectified by her driver while commuting to her home in Brooklyn. “Fuck men who think that you owe them your obedience [sic],” she said in her post. “I will not be told how to act or made to be objectified!”
Lindsey Wixson shares what she misses the most from her hometown of Wichita, Kansas:
While it’s not clear what exactly went down on her ride, this story isn’t exactly an unfamiliar one. In May, the car service company was brought to court over two charges of sexual assault. How many of us have to share stories of being catcalled, inappropriately hit on, trolled, or assaulted before we start to see some serious cultural change?
For women in image driven industries like Wixson, this becomes fraught territory—it’s easy for critics to say that by putting yourself in the beauty or body spotlight, you’re inviting this kind of treatment. To be clear, that kind of attitude is totally unacceptable. Let’s all say it together now: Objectification is never OK. Major props to women like Wixson for turning the spotlight back onto the people who think it’s OK to treat their fellow humans as anything less than just that—humans.
