Princess Diana's Hairstylist Explains the Story Behind Her Iconic Cut

There’s great hair and then there’s iconic hair—a beauty echelon reserved for the Anna Wintour, Grace Coddington and Kate Middleton’s of the world. But before there was Kate and her fairytale blowouts, there was Princess Diana, who made having a signature cut a royal affair.

Always a source of beauty inspiration with her pixie blonde locks, Diana achieved icon status when she debuted the short crop that would become her classic ‘do in 1990. Today, we so readily associate Diana and her memory with that insanely chic cut that it’s hard to imagine her ever looking any other way. In his new book, Hair by Sam McKnight, the stylist to the stars talks about the shoot that inspired the look and the spontaneous moment that prompted the princess to go rogue with her royal style. During a photo shoot of Diana in her tiara for British Vogue in 1990, McKnight gave the princess a slicked back faux short crop (the power of a good stylist)—which became a total game changer.

Diana was sold. “I made her hair look short in the tiara for the shoot and she decided she liked it,” McKnight writes. “As she was leaving Diana asked, if I had free reign what would I do to her hair. I suggested cutting it short and she, to my surprise, agreed, and we did it there and then.”

Thus was the beginning of long relationship between the stylist and his muse. As McKnight writes, he would visit Diana weekly and craft her most popular beauty moments, including the edgy slicked back look she rocked at the Council of Fashion Designer Awards in 1995. “I loved Diana looking more spontaneous,” McKnight writes. “During one particular portrait we worked on, Lord Snowdon had the inspired idea to photograph her with wet hair…and she looked incredibly chic. So for the Council of Fashion Designers Awards in New York, we decided she would try it out in public,” he says. “The flowing day the front pages spoke volumes.”

Judging by the long list of iconic hair looks Diana debuted, it seems her partnership with McKnight really was the stuff of fairytales.
