Stop Stressing Over These Top Beauty Taboos

What’s the beauty equivalent of wearing white after Labor Day? Maybe it’s checking your reflection to see that you have a light ‘stache on your face. Maybe it’s a dusting of dandruff on the shoulders of your crop top. And maybe these beauty taboos, like that white-after-Labor-Day rule, are old-fashioned and better off ignored. Check them out and let us know how you really feel.

Your Untouchable Eyebrows

Overgrown eyebrows are the trendiest of taboos. Did we not all swear off our tweezers after Cara Delevingne came on the scene? But it’s tough to wear them with confidence when your mom leans in close and says, “Honey. Those eyebrows.” Don’t sweat it. It may be a good idea to do some light grooming before, say, a job interview, but otherwise, we recommend you let it grow.

Your Banged-Up Pedicure

There’s no shame quite like foot shame. You break out your sandals only to find that the only thing anyone’s checking out is your battered toenail polish—and wait, is that an ingrown nail? But even if your toenails are buffed to perfection, they may still seem underdressed and undone. The best solution: Remember that most men have hobbit feet. Yeah, we said it!

Those Flakes on Your Shoulder

We need to talk about dandruff. It is real. It is normal. And yet somehow, buying a bottle emblazoned with “Dandruff!” at your local drugstore is on par with purchasing maxi pads and jumbo boxes of condoms—two other things that shouldn’t make anyone sheepish. Don’t even get us started on the humiliation when someone actually reaches over to brush a rogue flake out of your hair (and if you’re that person, don’t!). Instead of feeling embarrassed, make like Jay-Z and go on, dust your shoulders off.

The Fuzzy Hair on Your Face

Not okay: When your snarky boyfriend rolls over in the morning, pokes at the corner of your mouth and says, “You have a little hair there.” Whether it’s peach fuzz or a full-on five o’clock shadow, facial hair is one of the most natural things ever. Less natural, actually, is bleaching it, burning it, tearing it out with hot wax, or anything else that could double as a torture method on Game of Thrones. Whether you’re okay with your little ‘stache or know your wax technician’s birthday off the top of your head, our favorite hair removal advice is: To each their own.

The Dependence on Face Wipes

There’s a small, but bubbling, backlash against face cleansing wipes, which remove makeup but can leave residue on skin. But they’re so convenient! Very travel-friendly! Just plain easy. But if you use them on a daily basis instead of giving your face a good scrubbing, you may wonder why your skin seems so red and angry. They’re fair game once in a while, like after a late night or on a weekend trip. But if you can’t help but use them every night, at least rinse your face afterwards with water. Your skin will thank you.

That Gel Manicure Habit

At first, gel nail polish seemed like the answer to our long-held question: How can we get our manicure to look better and last longer? And it is pretty damn thrilling to go home from the salon and stick your hands into a sink full of dishes without worry. It seems too good to be true. And, it totally is: The removal process is, really, a process, and back-to-back gel manicures can cause weak, brittle nails. If you love them anyway, just do it in moderation. For a chip-free mani before a big event or to try out a cool nail art design? Go for it. 365, 24/7? Not the best for your nails.

Your Not-So-Stringent SPF Reapplication

You know you should wear SPF. Maybe you even wear it on a regular basis (go you!). But sunscreen isn’t exactly user-friendly, and unless you’re at the beach, that whole reapplication thing can be kind of a drag. Find us a person who actually puts on more sunscreen every two hours—rain, shine or in her office all day—and we’ll show you a unicorn. The easiest way to make it routine is to use a sun-block powder, which you can simply brush on over makeup (and, bonus, it’ll soak up oil). It’s a win-win for your skin.

Contoured Cheekbones in Spin Class

If we’ve heard it once, we’ve heard it a thousand times: For the sake of your skin, take off your makeup before working out. But if you’re late to a class and just don’t have time to clean off your cat-eye before hopping on your bike, it’s okay. Eye makeup probably won’t kill you. Foundation isn’t quite as easy to get away with, but with a few swipes of a face-cleansing wipe—here, the perfect way to use it—you’re good to go.
