The Blue Eyeliner Trend That's Everywhere This Week

Now that it's colder outside and the sun goes down at, basically, 3 p.m., I want to wear dark lipsticks and burgundy shadow 24/7. But there's a new blue eyeliner trend celebs have been rocking lately is convincing me to add a typically spring-leaning color to my beauty routine. Instead of brushing blue shadow all over the lid or subbing in a cerulean for black when drawing on winged liner, this trend is all about working the lower lashline. Yesterday, Joan Smalls posted a picture on Instagram of a look that makeup artist Porsche Cooper created. The model's lower lashline was rimmed with a scintillating sky-blue liner that pretty much instantly inspired me to go buy one. Then, I connected the dots and remembered I fell in love with Olivia Munn's smoked-out navy version by Patrick Ta when she attended a Prada event earlier this week. After that, I realized Marion Cotillard also went blue, too, at a screening on Tuesday. (Three's a trend, right?)

So why is this blue eyeliner trend so hot right now? You can thank the '70s influence that has been taking over the runway lately. "That era is back in a big way when we think about the glitter and gloss that's coming around in beauty lately," New York City makeup artist Ashleigh Ciucci tells Allure. "Blue eye makeup goes hand-in-hand with this more glam, disco, out-there vibe."

By focusing on just the lower lashline, you get to try out blue eye makeup in subtle way. "With just a swipe below your lashes, you're able to have a little fun without the commitment of a full-on lid of blue," Ciucci says. (Is it just me or did your mind just go straight to Barbie at the mention of blue lids? Girl could rock a blue lid.) When the rest of your makeup is kept monochromatic and nude, your eyes look bright and wide awake. "Blue also has a lovely side-effect of making the whites of your eyes look superwhite," Ciucci adds.

Ready to try it out? Ciucci recommends using a high-pigmented kohl pencil, like the , or Best of Beauty winner, the Make Up For Ever Aqua XL Eye Pencil in Matte Pastel Blue or Matte Majorelle Blue. "Tilt your chin down and gently tug on the skin under your eye to pull your lower lashline away from your eyeball," she says. "Then, sketch onto the little ledge of skin above your lashes." Seems easy enough, if you ask me. BRB—I'm going to go try it out.
