Honestly, I'm starting to think that there's nothing Guy Tang can't do with a head full of hair and a bottle of peroxide. He's created oil spill hair, metallic hair, and now, glow-in-the-dark hair. This week, the hair colorist extraordinaire posted a video on Instagram of his latest creation—and watching it instantly transported me back to playing laser tag at all my friend's birthday parties in middle school. In natural light, the model's hair looks like a fiery version of rainbow-colored hair. But under black lights, the bright colors have a neon, almost blindingly-bright glow. The stars you had on your childhood bedroom ceiling have nothing on this model's hair.
Tang, who has almost 1.5 million subscribers on YouTube, posted a video of the coloring process on his channel. From the looks of it, you probably shouldn't attempt this at home (unless you happen to be both ambidextrous and a professionally trained colorist, and even then I still might not take the risk). But in case you're wondering, here's a quick rundown: First, Tang lifted the model's hair color with bleach to make it light blonde. Then, he brushed on hair dyes from the Kenra Professional Creative Neons Colors collection in fuchsia, yellow, orange, and red in an ombre-like pattern. The fuchsia and red faded into the orange and yellow with the same fluidity as molten lava.
Other ways to try out rainbow hair:
The glow-in-the-dark hair post was to help Tang promote the Neon Hair Battle—a social media initiative that challenges people to submit their wild-and-crazy hair dye creations—a contest that he is judging next year. Hair stylists can post pictures on social media along with the hashtags #NeonMania and #NeonHairBattle to enter. So far, the submissions have been a rainbow lover's dream. Here are some of our favorites so far. Prepare to be mesmerized.
