Every morning you are faced with one of many choices: How on earth will I wear my hair today? One of the easiest we've ever come across is the half-up top knot, courtesy of none other than downtown cool New York City hairstylist Sally Hershberger. (As a brief reminder, Hershberger is the visionary responsible for Meg Ryan's iconic '90s choppy shag.) Hershberger, along with her friend and colleague Tim Rogers, recently opened a new 5,000 square foot salon in the NoMad neighborhood of New York City, and it's this hot new location that we tapped to film the easiest hairstyle ever. Fun fact: In order that stylists don't stumble over the ever-present cords of their blowdryers, at Sally Hershberger | Tim Rogers Salon, the outlets are located on the ceiling, so the cords are suspended in the air—and out of tripping proximity.
Here's how to clip in your own hair extensions.
In the video, Hershberger guides you through every little step of pulling off the half-up top knot. But, not to disappoint you, it's really not that difficult at all. And Hershberger is not about to overcomplicate things. "I'd make this so simple, I don't make a big deal of out it," the hairstylist says as she sections the hair behind the hairline and above the ears, then gathers it at the center of the back of the head. Rather than fussing to tuck away all the springy flyaways, Hershberger leaves them totally alone. "I like this to be a really wrecked bun," she says, as she pins around the circumference of the cluster with hair pins. "It's just cool," she says. Yes, the half-up top knot is actually that simple. And if the cute smile on our model's face is any indication, that is just right.
