On a scale of one to ten, how healthy is your state? If the ratio of Sweetgreen locations outnumbers McDonald's storefronts, you'd probably guess ten, right? Well, according to America's Health Rankings, an annual report by the United Health Foundation, an organization that's been ranking the country's healthiness for nearly three decades, you might be shocked to find that your home state isn't as lively as you thought it'd be.
This year's report, which compared a number of variables in all 50 states, including community and environment (i.e., access to clean water), behaviors (think: smoking and drinking), clinical care, policy, and health outcomes (premature deaths, a.k.a. lives lost before 75), found that for the first time since the report was created 26 years ago, the rate of cardiovascular deaths has increased. And since 1990, obesity rates have risen by whopping 157 percent. But, wait, there is some silver lining in all of this: Since that same year, smoking rates in the U.S. have decreased by 41 percent, with a 17 percent decline within the last four years.
And for the news you've all been waiting for: The healthiest state in the U.S. is...(drumroll, please)...Hawaii. And this isn't the first time the vacation destination has ranked in the top spot. According to the report, this is the eighth time (yes, we said eighth) Hawaii has taken home the healthiest state award, and the fifth straight year its earned the title. (You know what that means? BRB, booking a ticket to Hawaii.)
Other notable mentions? Massachusetts, Connecticut, Minnesota, and Vermont, which all take the top five slots, respectively. And for those of you who live in New York, like us lovely Allure editors, you might be shocked to find that the barre-and-brunch state only ranked at lucky No. 13.
