Dermalogica has brought us some insanely cool skin-care launches over the years, including our editor in chief's fave spot treatment, its chart-topping eye cream, and now, the Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant.
The Daily Superfoliant, which is not to be confused with its rice-based, best-selling predecessor, the Daily Microfoliant, is the brand's answer to the rise of anti-pollution products we've seen within the last year. "While similar in form, the Superfoliant and Microfoliant couldn't be more different," says Diana Howard, vice president of research and development for Dermalogica. "Daily Superfoliant resurfaces skin and helps prevent premature signs of pollution-related aging, while Daily Microfoliant is known for its smoothing and brightening capabilities."
Dermalogica's new exfoliator, which is finely grained in texture, boasts pollutant-absorbing ingredients, like activated binchotan charcoal powder (another ingredient trend we've seen sky-rocket in 2016) to extract dirt and oil; rice bran, which gives the powder its grit; anti-inflammatory niacinamide; and lactic acid to slough off dead skin cells. And when mixed altogether, you've got one serious free radical-fighting formula.
So, how do you use it? Pretty easily, actually. After cleansing, simply pour out about half a teaspoon of the powder into wet hands (that's important) and start slowly rubbing the gritty formula together until it starts to form a foamy paste. (If your hands aren't wet, you won't activate the formula.) From there, glop onto your face, rubbing in circular motions for a about a minute before thoroughly rinsing. The result? Gorgeous, glow-y skin (trust us, we've tried it).

And swapping out your go-to liquid scrub for a powder version, like Dermalogica's, is a great option for those who'd prefer the opportunity to customize their exfoliating routine, says Elizabeth Tanzi, a dermatologist in Chevy Chase, Maryland, and an assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the George Washington University Medical Center.
"The powder has to mixed up right before use, so it can be customized to be thicker or thinner, depending on individual needs," says Tanzi. For instance, you could go for a grittier consistency if you wanted to brighten your complexion, or a smoother more liquid version to target pores. Either way, you're getting an exfoliating double-whammy, as the powder has both physical exfoliants like rice bran to rub away dead skin cells, and chemical ones, like lactic acid, to gently dissolve debris.
But, Tanzi warns to scrub with a light hand no more than once or twice a week, as over-doing it can lead to irritation. "Powder exfoliators are a mechanical exfoliator like mini-microdermabrasion, so they can be a little too irritating for people with the most sensitive skin," she says.
Set to launch on January 1, the Dermalogica Daily Superfoliant will retail for $58 at dermalogica.com.
