Self-tanner brand Isle of Paradise, is making headlines with their latest campaign — its first-ever to feature a curvy model, and with unretouched imagery, too.
The U.K.-based vegan brand, founded by celebrity tanning expert Jules Von Hep, selected model Carla Trujillo to front their new campaign, which you can see below. In the images, the model poses against a lilac backdrop wearing matching pink underwear and a seriously golden glow. Another image from the campaign features Carla laughing alongside two other models.
The company’s mission statement reads “we do self-tanning differently,” and they’re proving exactly why with this campaign. In an interview with the Daily Mail, Jules was excited about the brand's choice to feature Trujillo, sharing, “Life shouldn’t be about size and shape, it should be about how something makes you feel. I didn’t look at any of the models for their particular shape, I just wanted them to have a personality and vibe that resonated with my brand.”
That ethos is something Trujillo herself has expressed in the past. In a recent interview with Yahoo, she talked about her body and what it means for her to be a curvier model. “I’m very athletic, I eat healthy…with my cheat meals now and then. I am a woman; my body changes, sometimes I am thinner, sometimes I’m bigger. I always love who I am.” Though the 24-year-old model has previously appeared in front of the camera for everyone from L’Oréal to *Vogue Kids Spain *, she says it wasn’t always easy to book jobs: “I was different, I wasn’t a size 0. I shared castings with blonde, skinny, and light-skinned models, but I’ve never fit those standards. I was tanned skin, light eyes, and had a booty. I got a lot of nos.”
While Trujillo says she doesn't specifically identify as plus-size, casting women who represent a variety of body shapes and sizes is still a step in the right direction — one that brands like Aerie and Simply Be have proved to be impactful and successful.
