This summer, makeup lovers received some very exciting news: Two of the biggest cult beauty brands confirmed and released images of their first collaboration. Yes, we're talking about Kat Von D and Too Faced. the two brands will launch their epic Kat Von D x Too Faced collaboration called Better Together. And when we say epic, we mean it. The offerings include two standouts: the Better Together Ultimate Eye Collection and the Better Together Cheek & Lip Makeup Bag.
The eye-shadow collection is the palette you see above. It's actually two separate palettes—one from Too Faced and one from Kat Von D—that stick together magnetically. Each palette contains six new eye shadows from each brand and together will retail for $65. The Cheek & Lip Makeup Bag is also superexciting (and totally squee-inducing). It's a double-sided bag (one side shows an illustration of Von D's cat, Piaf, and the other side features a sketch of Too Faced cofounder Jerrod Blandino's dog Clover) that contains mini versions of each brand's staple products, all in brand-new hues (except for the Too Faced Candlelight Glow Highlighting Powder in Rosy Glow). The new products include Too Faced Love Flush Blush in So Happy Together, a Kat Von D Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in XO, and a Studded Kiss Lipstick in Muse.
And if you love the brands' classic products, they are also offering a $20 Better Together Bestselling Mascara & Liner Duo, which includes travel-size versions of the famous Too Faced Better Than Sex Mascara and Kat Von D Tattoo Liner in Trooper. Wondering how this whole collaboration came to be? Well, you can find out straight from the source. In an exclusive interview with Allure, Von D and Blandino spill all the details about the game-changing collaboration.
On how they met and became beauty besties:
Blandino: "Eight years ago, I was at a Sephora district conference—I think in Arizona—and she had just launched her line."
Von D: "It was my first time experiencing anything like that. There were so many makeup brands I grew up looking up to, and honestly, not a lot of them were very nice. I guess in our society it’s a bit challenging for people to be happy for one another or to celebrate one another instead seeing one another as competition. I was walking around and this blond guy goes, 'Kat!' And I didn’t know who he was, and he goes, "I just want to tell you that I’m so excited you’re here. The makeup world needs you."
Blandino: "For whatever reason, in our industry, founders aren’t supernice to one another—I don’t know why. But when I met Kat, I was so excited because she brought this beautiful new perspective and this creative, wonderful, and unique energy to our industry. And I fell in love with her. I thought she was so beautiful and clever. She also has a great heart. So ever since then, we’ve been authentic, real friends who love and support and celebrate one another."
Von D: "It was the sweetest thing ever. He goes, 'I'm here with Too Faced.' And I was like, 'No way.' I grabbed my purse and said, 'I want to show you something,' and I pulled out the Too Faced Candlelight Glow Highlighting Powder. I was like, 'I'm your biggest fan.' And we’ve just been friends ever since."

On how they decided to create a joint collection:
Von D: "I wish I could take credit, but it was really Jerrod who came up with the idea."
Blandino: "I was sitting around one day, and thinking. Something has happened in the world where a critical voice has been given to some cowardly people who hide behind their computers or phones and say mean things to people that they would never say to their face and criticize brave people who put themselves out there. And I felt that this isn’t OK. So I called Kat up and said, 'Kat, we love and celebrate each other and we’re so happy for each other’s successes, and neither of us needs to fail for the other to succeed, so let’s do something that shows the world that we’re better together. And maybe we’ll inspire people to stop being so mean or so negative or so critical and start celebrating and accepting each other in a much nicer way.' That’s really where it came from."
Von D: "He said, 'Why don’t we do something together? Nobody’s ever done that.' I feel like Too Faced has always followed the same ethics as Kat Von D Beauty. They’ve been cruelty-free and really vocal advocates for anti-animal cruelty, and that’s something that’s such a deal breaker for me. It felt like a perfect fit. I couldn’t think of another person I’d want to partner up with."
Blandino: "It’s like Bentley and Rolls-Royce coming together to make a car. It would never happen. And I don’t know why. We can continue to succeed and be our own selves. We’re not diluted by collaboration or by celebrating one another; we’re only made better. It's a better world when we can support and lift one another up. To be able to collaborate with a great friend of mine who has such a unique and beautiful company was a privilege."

On creating the products:
Blandino: "She wanted to do something that really epitomized her brand, and so did I, so we sat down one day and talked about it, and we both agreed that we needed to do eye shadow. Our side is kind of more romantic flirty and feminine, and her side is cool and smoky and sultry with pops of color."
Von D: "The heart-shaped palette is inspired by those BFF-heart-shaped necklaces. You have your half and I have mine, but together it fits. We both have different eye-shadow formulas. People love our triple-milled super-high-pigmented soft supermatte formulas. And for Too Faced, they have a huge following for all their shimmer and glitter. I just knew organically it would complement each other, so we just went in our own corners, came up with our own ideas, and then we would meet up and be like, 'What did you come up with?' And then we tweaked things and made minor changes."
Von D: "For me, it was really important that these were new and exclusive shades. I hate when people just regurgitate the same shit over and just put a different spin on the packaging. All of the eye shadows in the palette and the lipsticks are brand-new shades—and I’m completely stoked about them. There’s a shade on my side called Swoon, and it’s this satin-foil red shadow and it’s like Christmas."

How Too Faced and Kat Von D complement each other in a collection:
Von D: "I think Too Faced is the yin to my yang. When you look at Kat Von D beauty and Too Faced and put them together, they look like complete opposites, but there are tons of similarities. I don’t want to say that Kat Von D isn’t feminine, because it is; it’s just a different type of feminine. There’s a lot of pink going on in the Too Faced world, and there’s a lot of black in Kat Von D beauty. We both celebrate femininity in our own ways—there’s are many forms of self-expression—and I think together, we’re definitely better."
Blandino: "I know and believe we share a client—our customers cross over in a very big way. We both want you to be the best version of yourself. We’re not intimidating, we’re not trying to tell you to be somebody that you’re not, and I think Kat and I, the way we live our lives and lead our companies, is a testament to that. This wasn’t about getting more money. It's really about sharing our love for one another and collaborating for the people who have supported us all these years and have loved us and allowed us to do what we do. And if we can somehow introduce our clients to each other's brands, all the better. That’s just spreading the love."
Von D's favorite Too Faced products and Blandino's favorite Kat Von D products:
Von D: "I love Better Than Sex Mascara, and Shadow Insurance Eye Primer is superawesome."
Blandino: "I have a secret obsession with her Metal Crush Eyeshadows. They’re freaking amazing. I want to rub them all over my body and dance around. She knocked that baby out of the ballpark."
On whether or not they'll work together again:
Blandino: "You never know!"
Von D: "On the binding of the palette it says 'Volume 1,' and that's basically saying that if people respond and love it, why the hell not make a Volume 2. They're magnetized, so you can just take the Too Faced side or the KVD side and use it by itself or together. But if there are different volumes, it'll be so nice to mix and match. I have a feeling there are going to be a lot more to come in the future."
