Melania Trump's $51,500 Dolce & Gabbana Coat Sparks Twitter Reactions

Melania Trump's wardrobe is causing a LOT of conversation lately as she accompanies President Trump on his world tour. Last week, the First Lady was spotted in Saudi Arabia without a headscarf. Then, both she and Ivanka wore veils when visiting the Pope in Rome, as is Vatican protocol for women in the presence of the Pope. While both style choices have been common with other First Ladies and many western visitors in general, each sparked heated responses. However, this Friday, while making the last stop on the tour with President Trump for the G7 Summit in Italy, Melania stepped out in a Dolce & Gabbana look that really got people talking, and this time, the outfit couldn't be explained by politics or protocols.

The standout piece of the look was the collarless silk coat covered in 3D flowers, which she wore draped over her shoulders and covering an ivory shift dress. Though the coat itself is beautiful, the reason for the controversy is this — it's from the 2017 fall collection, and it costs $51,500 dollars. Folks on Twitter were quick to point out that this is more than many make in a whole year, and that wearing it (especially to political events) makes the First Lady seem a bit out of touch.

Some people pointed out there were prior criticisms of Michelle Obama for wearing a $2,000 dress, which almost seems quaint now, given that Melania Trump's Dolce and Gabbana look is around 25 times more expensive. Hilary Clinton was also criticized in the past for wearing a $12,000 coat, but perhaps it's context here that matters — as Twitter user @MrDane1982 points out.

While she should be able to wear whatever she wants (of those designers who will dress her), this look — and the price tag that comes along with it — is a bit shocking. It feels a bit like Melania is having a Marie Antoinette moment but with fashion instead of cake.
