There’s something about holiday hair that’s different. It’s not your usual pixie or bob cut, holiday hair is festive. It’s sparkled. Last year hair foiling hit the scene just in time for the holidays, and it looks like the trend is back with a vengeance.
“All things glitter is having a huge moment in fashion right now from makeup to shoes we are glitter covering everything,” says Sarah Lund, style master for Kevin.Murphy. “Hair is always the hat of fashion so trends we see in clothing on the runway always tend to reflect the hair styles we wear. Hair foiling is a chic way to achieve a modern sparkle in the hair.”
And isn’t there always room for more sparkle?
Luckily, with the proper tools (fleck foil, hair spray and an eye shadow brush), you don’t have to be a pro to nail the look. But if you’re new to foiling, go easy on the application—a little goes a long way.

First, prep damp hair with a setting lotion that gives lots of volume. Next, set hair on a large curling iron holding horizontally so hair falls into waves instead of curls. Once cooled, smooth over with a brush and hairspray, concentrating in areas you want the foil the stick—Lund suggests along the part line or around the hairline. Allow the spray to become tacky and gently place the foil flecks randomly on sections patting in with a small makeup brush. Lastly, use the eye shadow brush to lightly tap and drag the foil to break apart the pieces.
Now the big question is, how do you remove the foil after the application? It's easy. Just brush thoroughly with a boar bristle brush to break up the foils and then follow up with shampoo.
“Foiling is the chic older sister to glitter roots, the girl who likes to look a bit more expensive,” says Lund.
And who doesn’t want to look expensive during the holidays?
