Late last month, lingerie brand Playful Promises posted a photo of plus-size customer Jewelz Mazzei rocking a lingerie set from the company's line. In addition to singing Mazzei's praises in its caption, the brand also commented with a a word of warning for anyone who wanted to leave a rude comments about Mazzei. "Goes without saying, but negative comments will be deleted (if you don't like something, that's fine, keep scrolling)," it said. "Anyone who continues to comment after having comments deleted will be blocked. Anyone that tries to pull in known trolls to comment will be blocked. Known trolls are already blocked."
The company reportedly removed comments from Instagram users claiming to be "concerned" about Mazzei's health and her lingerie's fit, as well as those who questioning the company's decision to feature a plus-size body at all. Playful Promises also responded to the body-shaming sentiments. "I guess [the commenter] doesn't know that our plus size and fuller bust sizes sell just as well as our core sizes, so it'd be pretty daft business sense not to show plus size women looking confident and fierce as fuck in our lingerie," it wrote in reference to a now-deleted comment on the post. "She's a customer, she knows how she wants her bra to fit, and we think it looks amazing," the brand said to another user who claimed Mazzei's bra didn't fit correctly.
Trolls aside, many fans chimed in to compliment the brand on taking a stand and backing up their model. "I love that you post ladies of all different sizes and shapes!" one person commented on the post. "Humans aren't meant to look the same and people deserve to feel good in their own way! Ladies outside the societal ideal deserve to feel sexy and amazing too and I know how much nice lingerie helps me feel better about my body!"
This isn't the first time Playful Promises has featured a plus-size customer on its Instagram, and the brand says it will continue to honor all kinds of bodies. “Women are not treated well on the internet,” Playful Promises brand manager Anna Sampson told Brit + Co. “It’s irresponsible for brands not to stand up for their customers, showcasing things like diversity and support are important. As a consumer, I don’t want to browse lingerie and see reminders of how much society values the slim, white cisgender woman, I want to see reminders of how amazingly diverse we are!”
There's a lot other brands can learn from Playful Promises about offering a range of sizes and celebrating diversity — not to mention standing up for models who may get backlash just for being themselves.
